Gamla Stan, or the Old Town, is one of the first places you should see in Stockholm. It was built in the thirteenth century. With its cobblestone alleys, vibrant buildings, and ancient squares, Gamla Stan is one of Europe’s best-preserved mediaeval city centres. The district’s centre is Stortorget, a busy square with recognisable homes all around it. Also worth seeing are the Stockholm Cathedral, Storkyrkan, and the Nobel Prize Museum, which honours the illustrious award’s history.

• Stockholm Archipelago
